The Planets Song Well there is Mercury and Venus Earth and Mars Jupiter and Saturn Those are the big ones Uranus and Neptune But not Pluto Those are the planets Mercury is the little planet that's closest to the sun It only takes 88 days for Mercury to orbit the sun Now Venus is a beautiful planet but it's too hot to live there You could cook an egg right on the ground on Venus The Earth is a very important planet. It's where you live Mars. Well, there's not a lot to do on Mars. It's kind of boring there Now Jupiter...that planet is huge And Saturn. Saturn's got all the pretty rings Uranus is a pretty blue planet that spins funny Neptune is now the last planet Neptune is the last planet Neptune is the last planet Pluto used to be last, but I still love you.

Scientific Method It's very scientific, scientific method. Question, research, hypothesis, experiment, analyze, report. Awesome! The history of the scientific method is a long and winding road that goes back almost 2000 years. Dozens upon dozens of scientists have played a part in refining the method to what it is today, including some serious scientific heavy-hitters, like...oh, I don't know...Aristotle! Newton! Galileo! And also Roger Bacon and Descartes. Mmmm...Bacon. Some ancient Muslim thinkers also played no small part in the method's development. But I know what you're thinking: What is the scientific method, and how does it affect me?!?? It's very scientific, scientific method. Question, research, hypothesis, experiment, analyze, report. Awesome! So, as a definition, scientific method - it's a set of steps that scientists use when they're trying to further scientific knowledge. Anybody can do an experiment, but if you don't follow the scientific method, your results will most likely be meaningless to the rest of the world. Step 1 - Question. Ask a question about something you're interested in. Step 2 - Research. Read as much as you can about that subject. Step 3 - Hypothesis. What do you think you can prove? Step 4 - Experiment. Step 5 - Analyze your results, and Step 6 - Report your data to the world. It's very scientific, scientific method. Question, research, hypothesis, experiment, analyze, report. Awesome! The scientific method, in a nutshell, is basically just a way to keep your scientific work very neat and clean, and have your results be something that other people can easily go back and duplicate. Also, a lot of times, you'll want to do many experiments that are very similar, where only one or two attributes change from one experiment to the next: scientific method will help you do this. I want to leave you with a quote. "It has often been said that the greatest discovery in science was the discovery of the scientific method." Where would we be without it?! It's very scientific, scientific method. Question, research, hypothesis, experiment, analyze, report. Awesome!

The Oceans Song Well, there's The Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Southern. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Southern. Let's start with The Pacific, because it is the big one. It's about as big as all the land on Earth combined. All of it! Half of the water in the world is out in The Pacific Half of all the water! Let me bore you with a few numbers here: Pacific Ocean is over 60,000,000 square miles. It's full of sand and mud and snails and whales and plastic bottles. The Mariana Trench, south of Japan, is almost seven miles deep. It's where Godzilla and the Kaiju probably came from. There are billions of beautiful creatures living their lives, despite the best efforts of humans and volcanoes and Lord knows what else. Well, there's The Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Southern. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Southern. The Atlantic Ocean is the second biggest. It's really salty, there are hurricanes in the north, it's where Columbus and the Mayflower sailed, and there's the Bermuda Triangle. Where all kinds of airplanes just...disappeared. Next is the Indian Ocean. There are a lot of oil tankers and oil rigs in the Indian Ocean. It's the calmest ocean, so it's great for sailing, but there are a couple months out of the year where there are crazy monsoons. Also, in the last decade, there's been a nice upsurge in pirate activity. The Arctic Ocean is small and it's mostly normally frozen, but in the summer, currently, at least, half of it melts. The Southern Ocean isn't recognized by all. It's at the bottom of the world, it's very cold, it is not small. That's the end of our tour of the oceans today. I am far too scared to stay. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic and Southern.

Technology Where would we be without technology? That's actually a really easy question. Without technology, you'd be sitting in a cave, naked, gnawing on an uncooked squirrel. That sounds awesome. Not! Seriously, though; almost everything you have in your life is technology: your house, your car, your Xbox, your dad's toupee, a box of Kleenex, a waffle iron. Waffle Iron! Technology Starts with an idea Technology Making new stuff Technology Improving our lives Technology Marching forward When most people think about technology, they think about "cutting edge" technology. That's all the great, current stuff that's happening: the iPhones, the tablet computers, using your small phone to have a video chat with your mom, having a robot vacuum your living room. It's already starting to be like we're living in a Star Trek episode! Once upon a time, the hot item was the wheel, and mastery of fire, and then the printing press, the light bulb, the telephone, the internet. With great technology comes great responsibility. That's practically a quote from "Spider-Man," but that doesn't make it any less apt. Unfortunately, technology is not all lollipops and party horns. Nuclear weapons are a technology I sure could do without. As we grow more advanced, the dangers of technology will only increase, so we have to forever be diligent. Right now, we're already seeing the beginnings of terminator robots. You just know that that's not gonna end well. Another big question mark going forward is artificial intelligence. Eventually, an A.I. will far surpass the intelligence of all humanity combined, but what if it decides it doesn't like us? Can you imagine, though, if we don't destroy ourselves, how amazing the future's gonna be? It's gonna be crazy! We're gonna have furniture that floats! Maybe landspeeders! And almost certainly a holodeck. Three more words: robot dance parties!

The Apple Seed The apple seed becomes an apple tree. The apple tree grows apples. Apples are cool. I mean, nobody ever says, “hey, wow, apples are cool,” because we all take them for granted. They’re so delicious, and we just never think about how great they are. We can have one any time. And they’re so cheap. You can even have a tree in your yard if you want. Do you have any idea what would happen if you took an apple seed an buried it in your front yard? Huh? Most people don’t have any apple trees in their yard, but I have 387. I eat apples all the time. Apple sauce, apple juice, apple fritters, apple cobbler, apple cider, apple pie…I could go on and on! When I walk around, everybody says, “hey, Mr. Bemular apple tree guy! Do you have any apples today?” And I always say, “Sure, here’s an apple. You can have it. Cuz I have like 3000 more at home, rotting in my yard. If you’re serious about growing an apple tree, try this: take a seed and let it dry out. And then cover it with a moist paper towel and put it in the refrigerator until it sprouts. And then transplant it into a pot and water it daily. Once it’s about three inches tall, you can transplant it outside in a nice sunny spot with a lot of space, because an apple tree can grow to be over twenty feet tall.

Natural Resources I conserve, for what it's worth. I think it's cool to love the Earth. So what exactly are natural resources? Air, water, land, fuel, trees, ore, sun, wind, tide, animals. And there are more. A lot more. You could spend all day thinking up different things that our great planet provides. It's no secret that humans use a lot of natural resources. I mean, let's talk about food. We love food! Food is Awesome! Pizza, pasta, soup and juice. Put natural resources to use! So you and I, and billions and billions of people are scarfing down on food every single day. It's an absurd amount of food that we eat, as humans. Fuel is another natural resource that humans just can't seem to get enough of. Coal, oil, natural gas! Dig it up, frack it, throw it in the air! There are certain types of fuels that are clean. Like solar and wind, and hydroelectric. But unfortunately, over 80% of the fuel that we use comes from fossil fuels, like oil and coal. And those two fuels are polluting our cities and our oceans to a pretty disgusting level. Would it be crazy to err on the side of caution? I conserve, for what it's worth. I think it's cool to love the Earth. Most of the water on the planet is salt water. Only 3% of all the billions of gallons of water on the planet is fresh water, which is good for: drinking, bathing, cooking, gardening, just to name a few things. And 2/3 of the fresh water, I should add, is actually tied up in polar ice caps and glaciers. So not even 1% of all the water in the world is easily usable. How much water do you think you use in a day? That's a good question. I bet most of you would add up showing, and drinking water, and brushing your teeth, and flushing the toilet. Some of you might say, "I only use ten gallons of water a day." And some of you might say, "I can't use any more than fifty gallons of water a day, can I?" Well, you're way off. Because the thing that you do that uses the most water is eating food. Food, food, food, food. This seems crazy, but the amount of food that one person eats in one day, takes over five hundred gallons of water to make. Crazy! Would it be crazy to err on the side of caution? I conserve, for what it's worth. I think it's cool to love the Earth. The story of our world going forward is all about natural resources. Will they last? How polluted will we make our world? Pollution! Trash! Smog! Greed! Corruption! Apathy! Trash Vortex! Fukushima! Have any of you seen those pictures of all the people wearing masks in China? Because air pollution there is so bad that they'll get sick just by going outside. Have you heard of The Trash Vortex? It's 1000+ miles of just plastic and trash that floats around in The Pacific Ocean. Right now, we're just digging up every bit of fossil fuels we can get our hands on. Who knows how long it'll last. Right now, we're fracking. We're pumping water and chemicals into the ground to get more fossil fuels out. Who knows what we're doing to the world. (I conserve, for what it's worth. I think it's cool to love the Earth. I recycle when I can. It seems like pollution is out of hand.) Maybe breakthroughs in fusion energy will happen, and that could solve all our problems, but we can't bank on that. In the last hundred years, we've gone from two billion to seven billion people, and the world population just keeps shooting up. Would it be crazy to err on the side of caution? I conserve, for what it's worth. I think it's cool to love the Earth. I have a suggestion that would take a serious shot at helping the world's natural resource problems. But unfortunately, most of the people that need to hear it, they're not going to hear me saying it! But I want to say it anyway. And here it is: HAVE LESS BABIES! Have less babies, have less babies. Have less babies, have less babies. Too many people, sucking up resources. Too many people, too many people, too many people!
